They call this place the "Mecca of Mezcal," but standing in the middle of the Central Valleys with the heat rising off the earth, it feels more like a living laboratory of patience. We spent the day here with the family of Master Mezcalero Valentin Cortez, a name that carries the weight of generations.
A Journey of Feelings: This wasn’t a standard "tasting" or a tour. Thanks to our friend Asis Cortes, it was what we like to call a journey of feelings. There is something incredibly humbling about watching a family work together to turn a rugged, thorny plant into a spirit that tastes like smoke, earth, and history.
In the heat of the distillery, surrounded by our brother Eric and the Cortez family, the "Bridge" between Oaxaca and Crete felt shorter than ever. Both our cultures share this: a deep, almost religious respect for the spirits we pour for our friends. Whether it’s Mezcal or Tsikoudia, it’s about the soul of the land in a glass.
The Human Connection: We often talk about "sourcing," but today reminded us that we actually source friendships. The smoke from the agave pits doesn’t just flavor the spirit; it gets into your clothes and your hair, a physical reminder of a day spent with people who treat their craft as a sacred calling.
We’re leaving Matatlán with dusty boots, sun-kissed skin, and a deeper understanding of the fire that fuels this land.

Notes from the Road:
- The Landscape: Rows of blue-green agave stretching toward the jagged mountains.
- The Scent: Sweet, roasted agave hearts and the dry heat of the valley.
- A Thought to Carry: Patience isn't just a virtue; in Matatlán, it’s an ingredient.
